La Brea tar pits

This is in the very heart of Los Angeles.
It's really tar. And it's bubbling.

An active pit being excavated.
You'd swear BP had something to do with this.... :)

Bison.
Giant sloth.
Animatronic mastodon.
Mastodon, about 12 feet tall.

Saber-toothed tiger.
Horse.
Animatronic (it was moving) giant sloth and saber-toothed tiger.

Lots of wolf skulls. They hunt in packs, and it was surmised that they were often stuck as they went for prey that was stuck.


And it's an active laboratory, where you can watch the researchers in a fishbowl.
