Vehicles on Bonaire

Of course, as a former automotive design engineer, cars are interesting to me. :) Here are some of the vehicles on Bonaire that we don't get in the U.S.:
Pretty much anything with wheels is legal on the streets here. Even quads. This company rents all kinds of odd vehicles, from old Willys jeeps to the dune buggy in the foreground, to the 3-wheeled trike parked on the corner (it's got a small scooter drivetrain in it.)
If there's one ubiquitous vehicle here, it's the Toyota Hilux 4-door pickup. These, and 4-door pickups from Mitsubishi, Nissan, and even a few Chevys and Fords are very popular here, both with the locals as with the rental companies, because they make good vehicles for hauling scuba gear to the different put-in spots.

I also think these little micro-busses are really cool. It's even narrower than the Golf parked next to it.
Most, like this one, are called the Suzuki Carry.

The Chevy Spark. Basically a rebadged Daewoo.
There are a variety of Toyota Yaris', like this station wagon.

  1. Dean, I have long been a fan of cars that you basically wear and have hoped with rising gas prices here in the states that we would be eventually getting some of those micro models. What are some of the other micro class vehicles there. Any Subarus? What are fuel prices like there? Thanks for all the great news. Could you cut the mignon with your fork? Rick

  2. Not many Subarus, but I'm hoping to get a picture of a certain Subaru micro-bus for you. I've seen a couple. Size-wise they're like the Suzuki Carry, but have AWD and and a rear-mounted pancake 4. I think it is even 1.0L. Brad says there are a couple of WRX's here; I've seen one of them. Brad likes watching the Euro rally circuit on TV, and also likes mountain and road biking, so I think you guys would get along well!

Most of the other micro models are other Asian brands like Daewoo and Daihatsu. I've seen a few Euro cars like Fiats and Renaults, but few.

I think gas is about the equivalent of $4/gallon, but they sell it here in Guilders per liter. According to Brad it was about $4/gal.

Couldn't cut the filet mignon with a fork, but it was easily cut with a knife. :) No more splurging for a while, but I will probably hit a couple more nice restaurants before I leave. I'm almost at the halfway mark now -- almost 3 weeks done and 3 to go.
